Completing studies in Spain opens a new stage of decisions, but does not automatically transform study permission into residence for employment. To choose a next step, connect the qualification obtained, the authorisation held, its dates and your immediate plan. Having a job offer, seeking employment, joining an internship and continuing education are different situations that deserve comparison before an application is submitted or a starting date is agreed.
Collect four facts before comparing routes
Record the precise education and qualification or certificate obtained. Add your authorisation category, the rules under which it was granted and its validity. Describe your objective: taking employment, starting a business, completing practical training or further study. These facts determine which sources and conditions to examine. Graduate is too broad a label to establish that any particular authorisation is available or that the next step is identical for everyone.
Ask the institution how completion can be certified while the physical diploma is being produced. Establish certificate availability, academic closure dates and the exact wording the institution can issue. An attendance letter or results screenshot must not automatically be treated as equivalent to proof of obtaining a qualification. Check what the intended destination procedure actually requires before relying on a document that establishes something narrower.
Separate course completion, certificate issue, permission expiry and proposed employment start. If they do not fit, seek advice before filing or making commitments to a business. An urgent offer does not change the requirements or mean that a programme with outstanding assessments is already finished. A chronology showing the four dates allows the institution, adviser and employer to understand the uncertainty and what might resolve it.
Modification to residence and employed work
Article 190 of the Immigration Regulation covers particular changes from study or training authorisations. Identify the included categories and whether the required qualification or certificate has been obtained. The provision does not automatically cover every course. An earlier authorisation may also require the relevant transitional instructions to be read. Use the actual grant and educational record rather than transferring a new permit’s explanation to an older case.
Where an offer exists, gather the contract and employer information and check the destination work route’s requirements. Clarify who prepares and submits evidence, which actions belong to the employer and what conditions the business must satisfy. Both parties’ willingness to employ is not a substitute for reviewing the proposed relationship or the employer’s capacity to undertake its obligations under the application.
Establish when work can start. Preparation, submission, admission for processing and approval are different stages. Article 190 addresses provisional effects under specific conditions that must be understood through the actual administrative document. A generic receipt is not universal proof of permission for full-time activity. If the start date depends on provisional rights, obtain individual review and check the agreement issued before assuming those rights already apply.
If you want self-employment
Self-employment requires a project that can be evidenced, alongside the fit between your education, present status and the modification considered. Describe activity, expected clients, resources, investment and any professional or operating requirements. Having an idea or opening an online profile does not itself establish that you can start or that the conditions of the authorisation have been met. Investigate the administrative sequence before performing paid activity.
Separate commercial preparation from legal permission. You can research a business plan, costs and obligations, but check which actions amount to carrying on the activity and when you are authorised to do so. If the profession is regulated, establish any necessary recognition or professional authorisation as well. An academic award and immigration permission have different functions, and neither should be assumed to resolve the other’s requirements.
Use a conservative budget covering initial costs, tools, recurring obligations and the delay before receiving income. If the project depends on a single client, describe that relationship accurately and seek employment-law advice where its classification is uncertain. The purpose is a genuine, coherent project, not changing commercial wording to appear to fit a route whose conditions are not actually satisfied. Keep evidence behind the plan’s main assumptions.
Residence for job search or a business project
The Ministry’s information sheet 20 describes a specific authorisation linked to completed higher education and a required qualification level. Check your programme and every other condition. It is not an option automatically available after any private course, vocational activity or language-school certificate. Similar course duration or the word diploma in marketing material does not establish the educational requirement of this particular route.
An essential distinction is that the authorisation supports the permitted search or preparation period but does not itself authorise employment. If an opportunity appears, review the appropriate permission before starting. Compare that effect with a possible direct modification where an offer already exists. The routes answer different circumstances and stages, so a longer period printed on a permit should not be the only reason for choosing it.
Prepare resources and insurance according to the current source and verify the submission window and duration applicable to your case. Ensure you can support yourself while searching and understand the next procedure if employment arises. Write down which completion evidence you need from the institution and what a future employer would need to provide. This makes the search stage a planned transition rather than an assumption of immediate employment rights.
Internship residence has its own conditions
Information sheet 21 addresses residence for a programme of practical training under the relationship established by its rules. Higher education, its date or ongoing nature and the academic relationship of the placement are among the checks. An offer called an internship is not enough on its own. Ask what training will take place, how the host will supervise it and which legal relationship is intended.
Request objectives, supervision, duration, timetable and the agreement or employment contract proposed. Establish the documents needed from each party. The official source identifies the host entity as responsible for the application in the relevant arrangement; the organisation must therefore understand the procedure. It should not assume that the student can independently complete every corporate action or provide evidence only the host is able to issue.
Distinguish this residence from curricular practical training completed while enrolled. Documentation and effects may differ. If family members accompany you, examine how their situation continues or changes as well. A review limited to your proposed contract may leave relevant conditions unexamined. List affected family documents and ask explicitly which route supports their continuation before making commitments based only on the principal applicant’s position.
Further study and other personal circumstances
Further education can be a sound choice when there is a clear learning objective, but it needs its own admission and administrative assessment. Establish whether an extension, new authorisation or another action applies to your education and permission. Enrolling on any available course does not automatically preserve status or remove the consequences of the previous permission expiring. A receipt should not be treated as the answer to that wider question.
Connect the new programme with what you want to learn, its full cost and the opportunities it genuinely offers. Ask how admission is documented and when teaching begins. If the institution or educational category changes, assess the consequences before abandoning the former course. Our continuity and extensions guide helps organise those checks and frame the questions for the institution and relevant authority.
Other personal circumstances may also be relevant, including family links or a separate status. Each requires its own conditions and evidence. A list of permits should not present them as interchangeable products. If several routes appear possible, compare eligibility, permitted activity, family implications, time limits and effects during processing with individual advice. The most useful option depends on your actual circumstances, not only on the name of the authorisation.
A comparison to prepare the decision
| Your position | What to investigate | What must not be assumed |
|---|---|---|
| You have a job offer | Qualifying modification, contract and employer | That the offer allows an immediate start |
| You are seeking work after eligible education | Job-search residence conditions | That this residence itself permits work |
| An organisation offers a placement | Education, programme and agreement | That any placement meets the rules |
| You have a business project | Applicable route and activity requirements | That registration replaces permission |
| You want further education | Admission and administrative continuity | That any enrolment extends your stay |
Use this comparison to organise questions, not select a box without examining the documents. If an option fails on one condition, identify it and consider whether another genuine route exists. Filing several incompatible cases or inconsistent evidence without a plan may add confusion. Retain a chronology and seek clarification of the consequences before presenting applications that depend on different accounts of the same facts.
Speak clearly with the employer and institution
Explain to the employer which permission you hold and which transition you are investigating. Request duties, hours, location and proposed start in writing. Establish who coordinates business documents and how the right to begin will be verified. Clear communication allows expectations to be adjusted without promising a date that still depends on an administrative action, a completion certificate or an employer requirement not yet resolved.
Ask the institution for precise completion evidence and an explanation of issue times. Verify personal details, programme name and date. Request corrections before submission and retain the certificate with the relevant academic decision and verification contact. If a representative acts for you, agree what will be reviewed, how you receive the submitted file and who monitors notifications. Delegating administration should not leave you unaware of the route being requested.
Example: completing the same degree with different plans
Ana finishes a master’s programme with an employer interested in hiring her. Before choosing job-search residence, she checks whether a modification fits and which employer documents are needed. A classmate finishes without an offer and investigates job-search requirements, resources and the absence of work permission during that stage. A similar qualification does not make the decision identical because their professional circumstances differ.
Both ask how completion is certified and check their current permission’s timetable. If the offer changes or evidence is delayed, they reconsider the sequence before acting. After a favourable decision, read its conditions and subsequent steps through our Spanish decision guide; for a refusal, use the initial-checks guide.
