The Spanish social security number is known as NUSS and is also connected with the term NAF. It identifies a person in dealings with social security. When an employer asks for it, first establish whether a number already exists or whether you need a first allocation. This guide helps you find the appropriate route and avoid confusing the identifier with a NIE, healthcare card or proof of employment registration.

Identify the task before opening an application

Three common tasks are finding an existing number, obtaining official evidence of it and requesting a first number. Write down which one applies. Earlier work or another interaction with social security may have produced documentation you can check. Looking for that evidence first can save you from starting a procedure that does not address the actual request.

The official number application service explains the allocation procedure. If the real problem is that a new employer does not appear on your record, continue with registration and work history, not another number request. If an employer wants evidence of your identifier, ask which document they need rather than sending an entire employment history merely because it also contains the number.

NUSS, NAF, NIE and healthcare numbers

These terms often appear together in employment conversations, but they do not identify the same document. NIE identifies a foreign national. A card and immigration decision concern administrative status. The social security identifier belongs to that system. A healthcare card belongs to another administrative context, and the numbers on it should not be copied into affiliation fields just because they look similar.

A common difficulty is having a photograph of a card without knowing which sequence a form requires. Locate official evidence of the number and read the field label instead of guessing. Do not try to reconstruct the identifier from online examples or share a complete card in a public group. Where your identity appears incorrectly, establish how to correct the record with TGSS before relying on it for another procedure.

Check whether a number already exists

Collect earlier documents and use the official consultation or accreditation options found through Importass reports. Verify that the result belongs to you and that the identity details can be linked correctly. Save the evidence where you can retrieve it for future employment. Repeatedly requesting a number already available in your records creates work without helping you understand your situation.

A service failing to recognise a document does not immediately prove that no number was ever assigned. You may need to review the details or use the authority's support channel. Prepare your current name and identity document, plus relevant previous references, and supply them securely when requested. An identity discrepancy should be described as such, not worked around by inventing employment information or changing personal details between applications.

    Prepare a first application

Read the current requirements before collecting files. Identify the personal, contact and address information requested and how identity must be proved through the chosen route. Make sure uploaded documents are legible and the channel is official. The task should not turn into sending photographs and personal numbers to intermediaries whose identity or role you have not checked.

For an employment-related request, coordinate with the employer so that both sides know who is doing each step and what evidence is expected. The general official procedure for obtaining the number explains the employer's role where the worker lacks one. Even if the employer assists, keep your own accreditation and check the details that will be used for the start.

    Electronic identification and service-specific alternatives

Access routes can differ between procedures. Check the choices offered by this particular service, test identification in advance and verify the associated contact information. When one method is unavailable, investigate alternatives shown there. Do not assume that a method for downloading an existing report is also available for requesting a first number.

Where a route requires supporting documents, follow the complete identification and submission instructions. Distinguish a prepared form, a submitted application and the response you need. Save them separately so that you can explain the stage reached if an employer asks for progress. A screenshot of a completed form may not be sufficient evidence that it was actually registered or that the number has been allocated.

Example: a new employer asks after a previous temporary job

Daniel previously held a temporary job and is now joining another company. He finds an old payslip but is unsure which item establishes affiliation. Rather than requesting another number, he obtains the official accreditation and checks its link with his current identity document. He then asks the new employer how to provide the verified information for onboarding.

Checking the new job's registration is a later task using the appropriate evidence. The number identifies Daniel but does not demonstrate that the new employer registered the activity on the agreed date. He can keep the NUSS certificate and use your first employed job to coordinate the contract, dates and subsequent registration check. Separating the tasks avoids a correct identifier being mistaken for proof that the entire start is complete.

Students, self-employed people and changed identity documents

Do not assume everyone without a conventional employed job necessarily lacks a number. Check whether an allocation already exists from an earlier situation before applying for the first time. If you are starting an independent activity, coordinate identification with becoming self-employed, while reviewing permission to work separately. The social security number is only one part of that wider route.

When your identification changes, keep the records connecting your earlier history and ask how to update the details. The goal is consistent recognition of the same person by the employer and authority. Do not use someone else's identifier or alter your name to get past a form. A technically successful submission with incorrect identity information may make later proof of your work history more difficult.

Keep the number evidence and check the next step

Once you obtain or locate the number, check identity, date and references, and store the accreditation safely. Share necessary information through an appropriate channel. On a shared device, avoid leaving identity files in downloads, open sessions or folders accessible to other people. Keeping your own copy does not require distributing it beyond the organisations that need it.

For employment, the next route is correct identifier, employment documents, relevant registration and subsequent verification. For independent work, continue with the business registrations and obligations. The current situation report addresses employment status; this guide closes the identification task. Knowing which question each document answers will make future employer requests easier to handle without repeatedly starting from the beginning.

Identity, permission and registration are separate checks

Before handing over documents, write down what the recipient needs to establish. An employer may need to identify you, check your permission to work and register your start. These tasks use some of the same personal details, but they produce different evidence. A passport establishes identity; a decision may describe the conditions of a permission; a social security report records the situation held by that authority. One document should not be used as a substitute simply because it includes your name.

Your NIE is a foreign national identification number. Your NUSS identifies your relationship with social security. A TIE is a card connected with your administrative status. Keep the full name beside each reference so that you do not enter a healthcare identifier in a field requesting affiliation, or supply a card when the full decision is needed. When your identity document changes, check the existing record before starting an additional application. The official NUSS service is the starting point for finding the relevant procedure.

A practical folder has four sections: identity, immigration situation, professional relationship and official receipts. Add a note explaining which fact each item supports and when it was issued. This makes it easier to respond when an employer, educational institution and authority ask similar questions for different purposes. Share only what is needed through an appropriate channel. If you need evidence of current activity, use the registration and work history guide: possessing a number does not by itself demonstrate that you are currently working.

Prepare electronic access and keep the actual response

Set aside time to test access on the device you will use before the procedure becomes urgent. Find the official website, check the service name and read the identification methods currently offered there. Different services may have different requirements. An alternative that worked for downloading one report should not be assumed to work for submitting a tax declaration. The Importass services directory helps you identify the report category before signing in.

Check the telephone number, email and identity document associated with your records. If a verification code does not arrive, first check whether those contact details are current and whether the identification process was completed. Repeating an application with different details can make it harder to understand which request you need to follow. When an option without electronic identification exists, read the conditions in that particular service. Do not send an identity photograph to an unverified intermediary simply because they promise a quicker result.

At the end, distinguish the form you prepared, the submission receipt and the authority's response. Save separate files with clear names and dates, such as application, registration receipt and issued report. Open the PDF and check that its reference can be recovered. A screenshot of the final button is not necessarily the document required as evidence. If a message is unclear, note its wording and contact the appropriate help channel before starting again. This routine is useful when coordinating your NUSS, registrations and tax obligations.

Keep the evidence of your employment relationship organised

Keep the offer, contract, messages, working schedules and payslips together, while identifying what each item proves. The contract helps establish what was agreed; the payslip documents the calculation of a payment; the social security report shows the administrative record; and the bank records money received. Comparing these documents is more useful than expecting one document to contain everything. When an employer issues a new document, check whether it changes an agreement or merely reports that a procedure was completed.

Start a review with the employer name, job, working time and dates. Then compare the agreed gross pay and payment schedule with the payslip items. Ask about a specific entry and retain the explanation. A lower-than-expected transfer might relate to an incomplete period, extra-payment arrangements or deductions that need explaining. Do not assume the reason before reading the breakdown. The payslip guide provides a method for working through these details without confusing a salary offer with a bank transfer.

The Workers' Statute and applicable collective agreement provide references for employment conditions and rights. In a dispute, the evidence and circumstances matter alongside the contract category. If actual work differs from what was recorded or communicated, note dates, hours and supporting documents before seeking clarification. This does not require publishing personal information in a forum. You can ask about a concept without sharing your identity number, bank account, signature or complete payslip with people who do not need that information.
